Joel Ballantyne is a high school track and cross country coach with enormous success in preparing athletes for championships. His girls cross country team has been ranked one of Broward County’s top five teams for two straight years, while qualifying for the state championships both years. He has helped bring the boys track program three straight district championships. His athletes have also gone on to compete in colleges from Division I through Division III. He coaches privately during the summer for the USATF and AAU National Championships. Each high school athlete he has privately trained has qualified for the National Junior Olympics in sprints and distance events. Coach Ballantyne emphasizes not only periodization of training modules, but also proper nutrition in order to achieve the best performance at the right time.

Santiago Aragon is a 19 year old NPC bodybuilder. He has been bodybuilding competitively for the past two years. He is recently undefeated in his bodybuilding career, winning the 2007 NGA Florida championships, 2008 Mid Florida Muscle, 2008 Southern States and the 2008 Teen and Collegiate Nationals. He is planning to take a year off to bring up lagging body parts and come back strong at the 2010 NPC Junior Nationals. Currently Santi is going to college in Orlando, FL majoring in Business Administration. He hopes to one day start his own business in the Bodybuilding and Fitness industry.

Joel Giacobbe, M.Ed. became an educator, strength coach and bodybuilder after earning his Masters from Auburn University. He is a past winner of the 1985 Southern States Bodybuilding Championships Light Weight Open Division and in 2006 won the Southern States Bodybuilding Championships Light Weight Over 40 Division 21 years later at 42 years old. Marie Spano, M.S., RD, FISSN holds a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and an M.S. in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Georgia. She is also the current VP of the International Society of Sports Nutrition and is frequent lecturer on the role of functional foods in sports performance. She has written several articles for trade publications and popular press magazines, chapters for sports nutrition textbooks, counseled hundreds of individuals on weight loss and sports nutrition and serves as the sports nutritionist for Pro Beach Volleyball player Al Hannemann’s Volleyball Vacations. Aspen Schmidt made history in July 2008 in CO by becoming at age 16 the youngest NPC Fitness State Champion ever. She is also preparing to compete next weekend in Pittsburgh at the NPC Teen National Fitness Championships. At the age of nine she found her talent for gymnastics, and at age 15 when her school started a team she was one of 10 girls in CO to make the all-conference team in the Floor Exercise, which is very similar to a fitness routine. Her mother began training with Jenny Lewis at the beginning of 2008, which lead her to the Carla Sanchez Performance Ready Team, for whom Aspen competed when she won the historical State Championship.

Cathy Cox, M.S. received her degree in Public Health in 2003, but losing 115 pounds with the aid of eDiets.com helped her to further define and focus both her personal and professional interests in health and fitness. In 2006 she became certified as a personal trainer, and began training to compete in half marathons. 2007 brought Cathy to eDiets.com as the Testimonial Manager. Pamela is a registered and licensed dietitian with a B.S. in Food and Nutrition from Florida State University and a M.S in Dietetics. Patrick Jacobs, Ph.D. earned his doctorate at the University of Miami. He is currently on faculty with the Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion at Florida Atlantic University. Patrick is a Licensed Athletic Trainer (State of Florida). He has recently done research on vibration training and the history of the hand-held model that has proliferated in many urban retail centers. Patrick’s writing has been featured in numerous publications including the Journal of Neural Engineering, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and more.

Chris Lieto is a three-time Ironman Champion and former U.S. National Ironman Champion. With an impressive 2007 season including a 6th place finish at the Ironman World Championships, Chris is on tap for an even better 2008 season. Andy Haman began pursuing his boyhood dream of becoming an IFBB PRO Bodybuider after retiring from teaching in the Public School system for over 15 years. He worked for a year and half every day for five hours per day and dieted for almost two years in preparation for his return to competition. Andy Haman earned his IFBB Pro Card at age 41 after winning the Super Heavyweight Class Championship and was named the Overall Show Champion at the MastersNationals in July of 2007. Andy can bench press 615 lbs, barbell curl 225 lbs 10 times and perform decline sit-ups with a 150 lb dumbbell for 15 reps. Abbe Dorn grew up in Denver, CO and attended Arapahoe High school where she was on the varsity soccer and cheerleading team. In college at the University of Northern Colorado she played soccer and received her degree in Nutrition. After college she worked at 24 Hour Fitness as a personal trainer. Her interest in figure competition lead her to Carla Sanchez and the Performance Ready Team and competition in seven shows. Abbe is currently a Denver Police officer for the city and county of Denver, and will take her athletic abilities into competition on American Gladiators on Monday, May 19.

Laurie Geisz is an NPC Figure Competitor, fitness model, writer and wife and mother to five children. After the birth of her first child Laurie exercised to lose weight gained during pregnancy, the next three births resulted in not enough time for anything except caring for the family. Her fifth child, Ben, died soon after birth, and Laurie decided to overcome her depression with a physical and emotional transformation. She hired a personal trainer and worked her way up to joining Carla Sanchez’s Performance Ready Team and at age 39 placed in two classes at the 2008 Northern Colorado Championships. She is currently training for the Masters National Figure Championships.

Julie Lohre is an accomplished IFBB Fitness & Figure Pro with over 10 years experience in the fitness industry. She is one of the most active IFBB Fitness competitors and has competed 24 times in the past four years. Gary Eklund, “The Coach,” has coached high school sports for over 25 years, including basketball, baseball and girls softball. He has lived and worked in Santa Barbara, CA for 20 years. Gary’s jobs outside of coaching were in radio in sales and on-air host and promotions. He produced his own football talk show for 19 years, as well as celebrity charity events since 1983, in 10 Western States and Mexico, raising over $2,000,000 for several charities. Gary now hosts his own yearly poker tournament in Las Vegas. Gary worked out with Carla Sanchez for four months after heart surgery in 2007, and in four months lost 30 lbs, 7 inches off his waist, reduced his blood pressure from 190/90 to 112/58 and reduced his cholesterol from 230 to 132.

Rick Bloomer, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Health and Sport Sciences at The University of Memphis. Rick holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He held prior positions at Duke University Medical Center and Wake Forest University as a research physiologist and visiting assistant professor, respectively. His research focus is centered on oxidative stress and frequently involves the use of antioxidant therapy to decrease macromolecule oxidation. Rick has been published in Sports Medicine, International Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport and many more.
