Chris Cander is a prolific freelance writer specializing in the areas of health, fitness, and nutrition. Her years as a fitness and bodybuilding competitor give her unique insights as a writer. Chris was named contributing writer to Oxygen magazine in 2001 and contributing editor to Clean Eating since the magazine’s debut issue in 2007. Most recently, she was named contributing writer to Maximum Fitness magazine. Jessica Hernandez is a 24 year old grad student at Colorado State University. She achieved a B.S. in Agricultural Business in 2006 and is working on her Master’s thesis in Agriculture and Resource Economics. She has been riding horses for 16 years, and competes in three-day events that are the equivalent to a human triathlon. In high school she played basketball and then in college got serious about weight lifting. Jessica loves to run and has completed in five marathons. Her current goal is to compete at the national level to earn her IFBB Pro Card. She recently placed 3rd in Class C at the 2007 Northern Colorado and won the VPX Meltdown Challenge.

Jorge Betancourt entered the competitive bodybuilding scene in the 1990s as a young athletic prodigy from Miami. Upon winning the Teenage USAs in 1989 and Teenage Nationals in 1990 Jorge quickly became a media figure as a top professional vying for the Mr. Olympia title. He made repeat appearances on ESPN’s bodybuilding programs and starred in the best-selling video Teen Wonderboy. Nancy Georges became a runway model after graduating from The Carol Crawford Modeling School. She loved modeling, but was unhappy with being very skinny with an extremely high metabolism. At the age of 16 she started working as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer, and within one year she had put on about 30 pounds of muscle and retired from modeling. Nancy started competing in Fitness in 1989 at the first Fitness America Pageant ever, and in 1991 she won the Ms. Fitness USA and Ms. National Fitness title. Tony Moya, Ph.D. is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Puerto Rico, and has a Master’s and Doctoral degree in pharmacology from The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Joel Ballantyne is a high school track and cross country coach with enormous success in preparing athletes for championships. His girls cross country team has been ranked one of Broward County’s top five teams for two straight years, while qualifying for the state championships both years. He has helped bring the boys track program three straight district championships. He coaches privately during the summer for the USATF and AAU National Championships. Each high school athlete he has privately trained has qualified for the National Junior Olympics in sprints and distance events. Coach Ballantyne emphasizes not only periodization of training modules, but also proper nutrition in order to achieve the best performance at the right time.
Danny Salgado is a 16 year old high school track and field athlete training under the coach Joel Ballantyne. Danny competed in this summer’s Junior Olympic qualifiers where he won both state track and field meets for AAU and USATF. He also competed in the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships in Detroit, MI where he ran the 400 meter hurdles and placed 4th. Danny has been running hurdles for seven years and is currently ranked among the top five runners in the nation in 400 hurdles.

Layne Norton is a natural pro bodybuilder who is pursuing his Ph.D. in Nutritional Science at the University of Illinois with focus on the regulation of skeletal muscle protein metabolism by dietary protein intake. Layne graduated with honors from Eckerd College in 2004 with a B.S. in Biochemistry. His articles have appeared in numerous magazines including Ironman, Muscular Development, Fitness and Physique, Planet Muscle, FitnessRx for Men, and others. Dallas Clouatre, Ph.D. earned his A.B. from Stanford and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. A member of the American College of Nutrition, he co-authored Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols to be published in September and also the Encyclopedia Of Dietary Supplements. His articles have appeared in Toxicology Letters, Heart Disease and other medical journals as well as several books.
Renee Jones, 44 years old, grew up in Colorado and has been running most of her life. Trail running is her ultimate stress reliever. 2008 marks her third year running Pikes Peak. In 2007 she placed 5th in her age group after they had split off the Overall and Masters winners. This year was especially challenging because she also ran in the Arctic. Renee has done the Mt. Evans Ascent three times, with the uphills without the down being her forte. Next up is the Outward Bound Relay on September 12, where a team of 10 covers 174 miles over 24 hours. This will be her 4th relay. She is also planning to complete the 14ers, as she loves being above timberline!
