Raiders Sign Veteran FB Owen Schmitt

Marcel Reece has yet to sign his contract tender but that almost nothing to do with the Raiders signing veteran fullback Owen Schmitt. For all we know Schmitt might not even make the 53-man roster and if he does it will likely come at the expense of Manase Tonga’s job.

Schmitt came out of West Virginia as a 5th round pick of the Seattle Seahawks back in 2008. He quickly established himself as a punishing blocker in the run game with the ability to be a threat in the passing game as well.

Just consider Schmitt a tight end lining up in the backfield.

Last season the Raiders were exposed for their lack of depth at fullback at one point going with rookie Richard Gordon as the lead blocker for Michael Bush.

Schmitt spent the last two seasons is Philadelphia and is infamously known for a bashing his head with his own helmet during a pregame introduction.

Raiders Roster Review: Jacoby Ford

Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE

Jacoby Ford’s sophomore season was filled with false starts. The NFL season itself got out of the gate late no thanks to the lockout and that surely played a role in Ford’s injury issues. Like many players around the league Ford had to deal with hamstring soreness that prevented him from getting into game shape. That would create a snowball effect that ultimate concluded with a season engine ankle injury.

Ironically Ford’s injury occurred on his longest catch of the season. Such was the nature of the 2011 campaign for Jacoby.

When he was healthy enough to compete, Ford flashed the brilliance that made him an absolute steal in the 4th round. Despite playing in only 8 games he managed to make 6 grabs of 20 yards or more, averaged 31 yards per kick return and even added to his collecting of house calls by finding the end zone twice including a 101-yard return.

What we’re all waiting for is for Ford to finally get meaningful reps with Carson Palmer. Keep in mind Palmer was without many of his best weapons during his rushed first season in Oakland. Before Ford’s season ended prematurely he and Palmer were just starting to develop a rhythm.

With a healthy Jacoby Ford the Oakland Raiders have an X-factor few teams in the league can boast of. Along with Darren McFadden, Ford gives the silver and back another player capable of changing the game with one touch. Of course keeping both Ford and Run DMC healthy is another story all together. Before last season there were no injury concerns with Ford so the real hope is that 2011 was the exception and not the rule.

Ninersnation.com: 49ers May 15 Practice Video: A Whole Lot Of Jugs

The 49ers were back at practice yesterday and we've got a bit more video to keep you mildly entertained. And I managed to avoid hiding it behind a private wall. Learned something new on YouTube yesterday!

There's not a whole ton to break down from this video, but head after the jump for a few thoughts.

The first 30 seconds featured a coach using the Jugs machine to fire off passes to receivers and defensive backs. They are not the most accurate or well "thrown" of passes. At the same time, Carlos Rogers spent a lot of time working with the Jugs machine as part of his process of improving his catching ability. He also got laser-eye surgery so that may have played a significant role, but the Jugs machine provides plenty of practice. I believe Vernon Davis spends a lot of time with the Jugs machine.

While yesterday's video from Monday did not feature a whole ton of material, it seemed to provide a bit more content than this one. It's better than nothing, but there's only so much we can take from defensive backs running wide receiver routes and linebackers jumping over some small padding.

The video wraps up with Randy Moss running a quick little route and catching a pass. Truly riveting stuff.

For now the team cannot run offense versus defense drills, but they are still able to work on some basics of playbook implementation. There is a limitation on their ability to work on play-calling adjustments depending on the offensive or defensive look, but they can work on fundamentals and other basics.

Ninersnation.com: Golden Nuggets: Darius Fleming Has Torn ACL, Hall of Fame Input

Hello everyone. How is everything this morning? Bad news on the injury front. Darius Fleming's injury has turned out to be a worst case scenario as he has a torn ACL. That will most likely put him out for the season, although one of the articles I read on the topic noted that Jeremy Newberry tore his ACL in an early offseason camp and was on the PUP list until week 9 before being placed on the roster. He didn't get into a game though. So, we'll see what happens. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do. The immediate beneficiary would be Cam Johnson and any other rookie OLBs vying for reps in camp and a roster spot.

In other news, the 49ers are looking for input into the new Hall of Fame. They've invited many of the writers (I've linked to Matt Barrows' story on it, but all the news outlets have something to add on it) to give input. And, the fans get to send in questions, comments and suggestions to the writers. It's almost like we're sitting next to Joe Montana! Well...almost....OK, not really. But, it's nice that they're looking for outside input. To the links!

Darius Fleming, who just signed a four-year contract on thursday has torn his ACL and will be out for a while. Chances are he won't play this year and that's an unfortunate turn of events for a 5th round draft pick. | Flemming has torn ACL. (Inman)

Jason Slowey has overcome all odds to make the NFL. He was viewed as a project player when he went to college at Western Oregon (which I honestly can't remember having heard of...ok, I've been away for nearly 10 years, but I would have thought I'd heard of a division II school) and now he's in the NFL, even competing for a starting position in his rookie year. | Slowey overcomes odds. (SFGate)

Matt Maiocco says that Dashon Goldson will sign with the 49ers eventually. He doesn't blame the player for trying to seek a long term deal, but the reality is that the franchise tender will be $2 million more than he's earned in the first 4 years of his career combined, so sitting out games is not going to be an option. | Goldson will sign. Don Banks gives us 7 strong hunches for the upcoming season and (if I'm adding links to national sports media then what is it...good or bad?) he thinks the Randy Moss of 2010 is what we're in store for. It's a sinking feeling that I think quite a few of us have, but the consequences of such a result won't be so dear now that we've added a WR with our first round selection. | Banks says Moss will be a bust. (SI.com)

The crime he is accused of is a particularly brutal slaying with a hammer. | Davis' brother declared unfit for trial. (CSN Bay Area)

Hopefully this will be the end of the Cohn v Davis feud, but there's no telling what made him escalate it in the first place. I get the feeling he doesn't like Cohn. | Cohn removes posts about Davis. (Bay Area Sports Guy)

SF Giants Rumors: Roster Moves, Nice Weekend In AZ, Melky’s Hot Bat

The San Francisco Giants sent infielder Conor Gillaspie back to Fresno and called up infielder Charlie Culberson.

Culberson made his major league debut yesterday (Sunday), and also managed to get his first major league hit. It was a great moment to see his father fight back the tears, and his mother looking so proud on Mother’s Day!

The Giants made another roster move this weekend by activating relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt from the 15-day DL. The counter move was to designate pitcher Travis Blackley for assignment to make room for Affeldt on the roster.

Bad Start, Great Finish

Friday night in Arizona wasn’t a great start to the 3-game set with the D-Backs. The Giants lost game 1 on Friday night, but managed to get the next 2 games to win the series. The G-men are 17-17, and currently 6 games back of the hated Dodgers in the NL West.

Hot Bat

Outfielder Melky Cabrera is swinging a hot bat for the Giants. He had a 4 hit game yesterday and is currently hitting .348 for the Gigantes. Let’s break his average down even more… From the left side Cabrera is hitting .304, and .462 (right-handed) off left-handed pitching!

Should we officially start the collection fund, so the Giants can re-sign Melky?

otrsportsonline.com: OTR was wrong, Johnson tied for MLB lead in saves with 12

JimJohnson1 300x161 OTR was wrong, Johnson tied for MLB lead in saves with 12Whoops! When Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter named Jim Johnson as the team’s closer, we made light of it, saying basically “who the hell cares?”

Boy, was OTR wrong…again (happens all the time, we’re used to it around here).

While it may not last forever, right now Johnson is smoking hot. He closed out the New York Yankees tonight and now has 12 saves on the year, tied for first in MLB. He has an absolutely insane ERA of 0.54. 0.54!

This is coming from a guy who had an ERA well over six in spring training. In our defense, it wasn’t like Buck Showalter was thrilled to name him as his closer at the time.

But, kudos to Johnson and shame on OTR (for now). This guy is pitching his ass off and could develop into one of the best closers in the league. Unless he doesn’t, because then he won’t.

otrsportsonline.com: Dutch soccer player consoled by daughter after relegation (video)

RogierMeijerDaughter 300x223 Dutch soccer player consoled by daughter after relegation (video)Well, if this doesn’t warm your heart then you are just an ass. On Sunday, De Graafschap, a soccer team that no one has ever heard of, drew to a 1-1 tie in their second promotion/relegation game.

It was after they lost their first game, and the club ended up getting relegated.

Rogier Meijer was visibly dejected after the game. He sat on the field afterwards, and then had someone come out to console him. Who? His young daughter Saar, who ran out in her dad’s jersey to see if he was okay. He shook his head and laid back down on the pitch.

Check it out, it’s too cute:

Juron Criner Drawing Denarius Moore Comparisons

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-US PRESSWIRE

We’re not even into training camp yet and already there is talk of yet another 5th round gem of a wide receiver that’s been unearthed by the Oakland scouting department. Last year it was Denarius Moore that stole the show with his preseason performances as a rookie. This time around it’s Arizona receiver Juron Criner that’s turning heads.

In the first OTA session that was open to the media Criner is reported to have put on a show featuring one 20-minute span in which he made four eye popping grabs.

Jerry McDonald reports that Criner’s early coming out party featured  a sick sideline catch on a 60-yard bomb thrown by Terrelle Pryor, a tumbling TD catch on a 50-yard toss by Carson Palmer that found Criner coming up with the ball between DeMarcus Van Dyke and Tyvon Branch and an impressive adjustment on a route over the middle in which Pryor threw ball behind Criner yet he still managed reach back and bring the ball in.

While Criner could prove a real find as a 5th round pick his talent has been on display in the PAC-12 where he was among the most productive receivers in college football’s best offensive conference. Criner’s ball skills have always impressed it was his consistency that was lacking as a Wildcat.

None the less, the Raiders might have hit the lottery once again as it looks like yet another talented receiver will be in the mix for a sure to be heated camp battle.

As for the comparisons to Moore…we’ll have to wait on that. Moore did his preseason damage during contact drills as there were no OTAs due to the lockout last offseason. So it is a little unfair to put the two side by side at this moment. Also, Moore has the type of blazing speed Al Davis loved to use in order to stretch the field. While Criner did do work on deep balls today it still remains to be seen if he can be that type of threat in an NFL contest.

Perhaps the ultimate irony is that the men who helped make Criner a Raider are no longer with the organization after Reggie McKenzie’s recent restructuring. Either way, it appears as if we could have another weapon in the passing game. Stay tuned. Things are already getting interesting in Oakland.

SF Giants Rumors: Vogelsong, Big Fly, Shutdown Reliever, Hit Streak Ends, Sellout Streak

Sergio Romo

Picture is courtesy of Marko Realmonte.

Last night was a great win for the San Francisco Giants. It’s a sweet way to start a 7-game homestand. I wish I could say Ryan Vogelsong was the winning pitcher, but he wasn’t. Vogelsong tossed seven innings and allowed just one run.

For those of you keeping track of the run support Vogelsong is getting. It’s not much at all… He’s only received nine runs of support over his last six starts. I’m sure he’s just happy the team got the win, but at some point the team needs to get him some “W’s” for his outstanding performances.

Big Fly

Outfielder Gregor Blanco showed that he also has some pop with the bat. Blanco hit his first homer of the season last night for the Giants.

Shutdown Reliever

This man isn’t the closer, but he’s a shutdown reliever! Sergio Romo is currently 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He hasn’t allowed a run this season. Romo is 1-of-5 Major League pitchers that hasn’t allowed a run this season.

Hit Streak Ends

Melky Cabrera failed to get a hit last night to snap his 11-game hit streak. Cabrera was hitting .468 during his streak. Who’s starting to think the Giants may have got the better end of the Jonathan Sanchez and Cabrera trade?

Sellout Streak

Last night was the 100th consecutive sellout for the Giants at AT&T Park.

Raiders Roster Review: Jon Condo

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-US PRESSWIRE

Let it be known that if you’re got a true skill you’ll always be able to find work in the National Football League. Just ask Jon Condo who’s made a career as a long snapper.

By no means is Condo’s job glamorous in any way. The only time anyone ever notices a long snapper is when something goes horribly wrong. Otherwise it’s among the most invisible jobs in all of sports. But Condo doesn’t need to apologize for his important yet overlooked line of work. His millions in the bank are more than enough recognition along being the rarest of all football rarities – a long snapper with job security.

The general public might not know much about Condo but football minds certainly do. That’s why he’s been to the Pro Bowl twice in the last three years. Condo is also among the reasons why the Raiders have the best special teams in the league.

If there is some concern for Condo it’s got to be his future as a Raider. Reggie McKenzie isn’t in the scholarship business and Condo has done well for himself living off of a couple nice Al Davis contracts. Currently he’s on the books for two more years but there’s no telling if McKenzie will stay the course. Having a great long snapper is very much a luxury in the NFL and no team has enjoyed that luxury more than the Raiders.

Ninersnation.com: 2011 Season Recap, Week 3: 49ers @ Bengals

Photo

Entering Week 3 of our 2011 recap, we take a look at the 49ers first road game of the season versus the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a game where players Shawntae Spencer, Chilo Rachal and Madieu Williams saw significant time on the field - obviously they were not factors for most of the season. Both the offense and defense also did not feature terribly aggressive gameplans.

In the following piece, we will break down quarter-by-quarter, the 49ers third game on 2011 against the Bengals. Follow me after the jump for match-up details and in-depth analysis.

1st quarter

The 49ers won the opening toss but elected to defer, which was beginning to become a trend. The Bengals came out with a methodical first drive, getting a couple first downs and getting into the 49ers red zone. Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton was surprisingly calm and sharp for rookie second-rounder.

A noticeable presence on the 49ers defensive front was Ray McDonald who was getting pressure pretty consistently, beating his man inside. The offensive attack by Cincinnati appeared perfectly balanced, and San Francisco was having trouble against the pass early. As an entire front seven, there was a lack of pressure and the defensive backs at times were nowhere to be found.

But sure enough, the 49ers red zone defense was stingy, always penetrating and swarming in goal situations. Ahmad Brooks came out hot and fierce and proved to be a factor in the game. The 49ers forced a field goal on an otherwise strong opening drive by the Bengals.

The 49ers retaliated with an inept offensive attack. The one highlight of the first quarter was a 22-yard Vernon Davis catch off a wheel route coming out of the backfield. The ball placement by Smith was on point, as he released a crisp touch pass.

But the Bengals defense was solid against the run and the 49ers were having trouble in protection. It was apparent that the right side of the line was hemorrhaging due to the start of Chilo Rachal. Rachal was getting beat and Smith was having a tough time making throws under the immense pressure. Regardless, San Francisco came out throwing more than the previous two weeks.

It was 3-0 Cincinnati entering the second quarter.

2nd quarter

Cincinnati was playing the field position game with the Niners - both with good defense and new offense. San Francisco was not getting field good position on offense during the game, and had trouble engineering longer drives. Smith remained under pressure, chucking bad passes all because Rachal was in the starting lineup.

Not only was Rachal sloppy in protection, but he began to draw penalties. In the second quarter, he got his first penalty of the game with a holding call - his second was a false start. We saw that when Smith actually had time he was able to connect to Josh Morgan, Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree. Nevertheless, it was still a very generic offensive game plan.

Under pressure, Smith was trying to push it downfield when he had a wide open Frank Gore that he could have hit for a gain but didn't. So decision-making on Smith's part also hampered any chances at early success.

The 49ers defense kept them in the game though. A huge unblocked sack by Ahmad Brooks - knocking Dalton's helmet off - got the Niners defense fired up. San Francisco began to show their unbelievably consistent tackling technique.

The defense held strong in the first half, but 49ers offense was anemic.

3rd quarter

Alert: Chilo Rachal benched in place of Adam Snyder

With Rachal out and Snyder in, the 49ers hoped to dismiss some of the offensive woes they had in the first half. Though new ones of course around in the second half: the ground game couldn't take off and there were some noteworthy drops from both Crabtree and Gore.

Ray McDonald continued to pressure on Dalton and keep the 49ers alive in this matchup. Had it not been for the San Francisco defense, Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green might've put this one away before halftime.

Now with more time in the pocket, Smith makes a great throw and Vernon Davis makes a great catch. Davis beat defensive back Reggie Nelson deep up the right sideline; Smith stepped up in the pocket and took a hit to deliver a perfect 39-yard pass downfield to his tight end.

While the 49ers were in striking distance, a great touchdown catch by Crabtree was wrongfully called back for illegal touching. Referees claimed the receiver stepped out of bounds before he made the grab in the back of the end zone; I think the replay says otherwise.

San Francisco had to settle for a field goal to make it 3-3 game. Before the third quarter could come to a close, the Bengals registered their fifth team sack on the day.

4th quarter

The San Francisco defensive linemen continued to pressure with four or less rushers; especially Ray McDonald and Ahmad Brooks from the left side. San Francisco's first offensive possession in the fourth quarter ended in a Gore fumble, forced by linebacker Rey Mauluga and recovered by Jonathan Fanene.

The Bengals didn't really capitalize, but added a field goal to take a 6-3 lead.

Even though it was looking bleak for the Niners, the offensive came alive just enough when it counted. Mr. Reliable, Vernon Davis got things going on the 49ers last drive on a tight end throwback screen. Davis had a very good game connecting with Smith, with 8 catches for 114 yards.

In the red zone, Kendall Hunter took a handoff to the left and burst through for a rushing touchdown to give San Francisco a 10-6 lead with just under 4 minutes left. It was a 10 play, 72-yard drive to take their first lead of the game and score their first TD of the game.

But the Bengals had some time left. Fortunately, Carlos Rogers undercut a pass intended for Andre Caldwell, registering a clutch interception, his first as a 49er. With an additional David Akers field goal, it put the 49ers up 13-6 with 2 minutes left.

On what was likely the last drive for the Bengals, a game sealing interception was made by 49ers back up safety Reggie Smith. This sealed the deal for San Francisco who rebounded from their loss in Week 2 to the Cowboys.

Ninersnation.com: Dashon Goldson Franchise Tender: Keep Moving, Nothing To See Here

Although things have generally been pretty quiet in 49ers camp, we do have a bit of non-news, so to speak. Free safety Dashon Goldson has not yet reported to Santa Clara and is not particularly close to signing his franchise tender. There were some reports he might report this coming week, but that has turned out to not be the case for now.

While the team and Goldson could get something worked out, I'd be fairly surprised if anything happened before mid-July at the earliest. The two sides have until July 16 to work out a long-term contract. If they do not come to terms by July 16, Goldson has to sign the franchise tender at some point or hold out.

The 49ers last franchise player was nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin. He waited until the day of their preseason week three contest to sign his tender. He got off to a rocky start that season and while he did settle in, it seems like his career peaked the year before his franchise tender. Go figure.

At this point, I think Goldson reports in time for the start of camp. It's more of a gut feeling than anything else, but I would suspect he will almost assuredly be in before the start of the regular season. Whether he gets a long-term deal done, remains to be seen. I am not holding my breath, but maybe it will take up until the July 16 deadline to get something done.

Raiders Quickly Pull Plug On Andre Hardy Experiment

Earlier today I mused on the impossible task that is making an NFL roster. Like clockwork another brutal lesson in adjusting to life in the NFL was learned.

When the Oakland Raiders signed Cal State Fullerton hoopster turned tight end Andre Hardy just over a month ago the best case scenario was that they unearthed the next Antonio Gates. If that is going to happen it won’t be in silver and black for Hardy.

Today the Raiders parted ways with Hardy, waiving the former baller along with quarterback Rhett Bomar. Hardy is reported to have been dealing with an injury that prevented him from fully participating in the team’s rookie mini-camp over the weekend.

Hardy’s odds of making the practice squad, let alone the 53-man, were long to say the least. But his fate was all but sealed once the Raiders announced the signings of seven players that participated in their rookie camp. Among those seven is Kyle Efaw, a tight end from Boise State. That would have made five tight ends on the Raider roster if you count Hardy.

Clearly the Raiders would rather focus their efforts on a project player like David Ausberry has played football has entire life and is just learning a new position. On the other hand Hardy is trying to learn the entire game, not just the position, at the highest level. Hardy’s quick departure is not only a reminder of how difficult it is to make an NFL roster but also shows how truly unique a talent Gates is. Turning hoopsters into tight ends might be a trend but that doesn’t make it easy.

otrsportsonline.com: Eagles’ Peters ruptures Achilles tendon…again

JasonPeters 300x210 Eagles Peters ruptures Achilles tendon...againThe 2012 season of the Philadelphia Eagles got off to a bad start in late March when Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters ruptured his Achilles tendon. There was a smidgen of hope that he might be able to play this year, but you can squash that talk.

A league source tells Derrick Gunn of CSNPhilly.com that Peters ruptured the tendon for a second time. Apparently, he was maneuvering in his kitchen when his Roll-A-Bout device broke. It’s expected to set him back about three weeks.

Peters had to have a second surgery to repair his heel.

Ouch. That sucks.

According to Gunn, Peters plans on suing the manufacturer of the device.

Raiders Roster Review: Aaron Curry

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-US PRESSWIRE

For as long as most of us can remember, the Oakland Raiders have been the official landing spot for players looking for a second or even third chance to start over again in the NFL. Last season Aaron Curry became the newest member of Oakland’s second chance club and this season could be his last chance.

Once viewed as a can’t miss pro prospect Curry was selected 4th overall by the Seahawks back in 2009 and never settled in at the SAM position in Seattle.

With the Raiders in desperate need of an upgrade at the weakside linebacker spot Hue Jackson went out and traded for Curry. Oakland moved Curry to the opposite side of where he played in Seattle, gave him less responsibility and prayed he could contribute in a meaningful way.

The results were mixed during Curry’s 11 games as a Raider. In some instances you saw flashes of Curry being a defensive wrecking ball causing havoc and destroying offensive rhythm. In other moments Curry’s aggressive got the best of him as he’d be caught out of position to make a play and at time was flagged for personal fouls.

Without many other options available, Reggie McKenzie chose to bring Curry back giving him one last chance to prove his worth as an NFL linebacker. If things don’t workout for Curry in the mysterious Dennis Allen scheme of things then odds are he’ll find it difficult to get another NFL job as a starter.

Part of the problem is that Curry has yet to define himself as a pro. Is in a run stopper? Not so much but he’ll make his fare share of tackles. Is he a pass rusher? He’s got good speed for an outside linebacker but doesn’t have many go-to moves and didn’t record a sack as a Raider. Is he any good in pass coverage? Well…no…not at all.

Curry is just an old school defender more concerned with hitting than scheming. Allen will need to find the best way to utilize Curry’s talents in order to get meaningful production out of this still project player. Otherwise Curry will become lost in the NFL shuffle forever saddled with the dreaded bust label.

otrsportsonline.com: More surgery for Britt?

KennyBritt1 300x199 More surgery for Britt? After lighting it up for my fantasy football team in 2011, Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt decided it would be a good time to tear his ACL and MCL in his right knee. It not only ended his season, it ended my fantasy season.

So, obviously Britt had surgery to repair the injuries, but it’s possible that he could need more. While no second surgery has been scheduled for him, he could possibly need a second, less-invasive surgery to fully repair the knee.

“I think it always is (possible),” head coach Mike Munchak said. “I don’t know if he will at some point, but I think that’s something that’s common with that injury. Derrick went through it last year. The good thing is that even if you do have it, it’s not a huge setback. It’s not something that sets you way back. But that is obviously part of the process, or could be, if that arises down the road.”

The good news is that a second surgery isn’t expected to set him back much.

“We don’t look at as a big deal. You have to look at it as why it’s happening, but it’s something that with guys who have had ACLs this is very common, something that’s gone on at times,” Munchak said. “Sometimes it happens much sooner than Derrick’s did, and sometimes it happens like Derrick’s did, once you get more active. We’ll see. He’s been doing well, running hard, and we’ll just have to see how the knee responds.”

Rookie Mini-Camp Proves Difficultly Of Making An NFL Roster

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-US PRESSWIRE

This weekend the Oakland Raiders held an audition of sorts for 60 players all of which have never played an NFL down. Officially it’s recognized as a rookie mini-camp. The reality is that it’s the last chance saloon for more than 90% of the men invited.

The next time there is an NFL work stoppage and the usual bemoaning of how many millions are being made by the players, keep this past weekend in mind. Most guys would feel like they hit the lottery by making the practice squad and earning the $5,000 a week that comes with it.

Of the 60 rookies the Raiders put through non-contact drills over the weekend six were drafted by the franchise. Another 13 were signed as undrafted free agents, 11 more that were members of the practice squad last season and an additional 30 who were invited for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Of the six players the Raiders drafted perhaps four or five will make the active 53-man roster coming out of camp. The 13 UFAs and 11 former practice squad players will naturally be battling for the longshot at making the 53-man but are likely all in the same scrap for one of the 8 spots allowed for the practice squad.

Which leaves the other 30 invitees almost no chance of making the Raiders roster.

We all know how tough a road it is to the NFL. Just getting a scholarship to a D1 program is tough enough never mind collecting an NFL paycheck. But considering 60 men were Raiders for all of 72 hours and may never see an NFL uniform again it puts in perspective just how long the odds truly are.

Ninersnation.com: 49ers All-Time QB #1

Now that things have slowed to a crawl in the NFL, the time has come to vote again on an all-time team for the San Francisco 49ers. This will be the third time we've voted on the team. Most positions will probably not see a ton of change, but as Niners Nation has grown in recent years it only seemed fair to give new folks a chance to vote. We voted once in 2008 and again in 2009. It's been three years so it's time once again.

I thought we would start things off with the always contentious QB position. The QB position has long been a source of friction for 49ers fans, easily seen over the last five years here at Niners Nation. The 49ers franchise has a strong history of good to great quarterbacks, dating back to Frankie Albert and Y.A. Tittle. The discussion focuses in on Joe Montana and Steve Young for good reason, but guys like John Brodie and Jeff Garcia were no slouches either. That does not mean some of these other QBs were better than Montana or Young, but they were notable in their own right.

For each of the positions, I am using my own judgment on the nominees. I'm fairly certain that just about any quarterback could get votes, but that doesn't mean they deserve to be on the ballot. Also, for the QB position, we'll have a starter and then a subsequent vote for the backup QB.

Head after the jump for a quick rundown of our candidates for the 49ers All-Time Team starting quarterback.

Joe Montana (1979-1992): I could include absolutely nothing here and it wouldn't matter. Joe Montana was the face of the 49ers in the 80s as they went from perennial doormat to Team of the 80s. Montana stands #1 in franchise history in career passing yards, touchdowns, completions and of course Super Bowl rings. In polls of who you would want leading your team down with less than 2 minutes to go, most people take Montana. While he was surrounded by plenty of talent, he made the most of it and was a leader of his teams.

Steve Young (1987-1999): It's fitting that Young and Montana will be battling for the starting position. After years in Montana's shadow, Steve Young got the proverbial monkey off his back in 1994 with one of the all-time great single seasons in QB history. Young finished his career with the greatest QB rating in NFL history. While he may not have had the sped of a Vick, Steve Young was one of the truly great rushing quarterbacks in NFL history. Combine that with uncanny accuracy and you're talking about an all-around threat rarely seen in NFL history.

John Brodie (1957-1973): Brodie finished his career third in the NFL in all-time passing yards and ranks as one of the greatest players NOT in the NFL Hall of Fame. Brodie ranks second in 49ers history in passing yards and third in touchdowns, while playing for plenty less than stellar teams. The franchise made the playoffs his rookie season and late in his career, but was .500 or worse for much of his career.

Y.A. Tittle (1951-1960): While Tittle spent plenty of time in Baltimore and New York, his formative years came with the 49ers as a 4-time Pro Bowler. Considering the slowly developing passing game back in the day, 16,000+ yards in San Francisco is nothing to sneeze at.

Jeff Garcia (1999-2003): While we might all agree Jeff Garcia was not the greatest quarterback on straight numbers, he certainly ranks up there for what he did in spite of his shortcomings. Garcia was rescued from the CFL by Bill Walsh in one of his best moves since trading for Steve Young. Garcia was a 3-time pro Bowler in his five seasons and in spite of such a short tenure, he ranks 4th in franchise history for passing yards and fifth in passing touchdowns. While his scrambling skills did not match those of Steve Young, he could maneuver in and out of the pocket quite well, which helped for his lack of traditional passing tools.

Ninersnation.com: NFC West Recap: Russell Wilson Impressing In Seattle

The 49ers wrapped up their rookie minicamp over the weekend, but due to closed doors, there was not much to be said about the Saturday and Sunday parts of the camp. We'll get some more thoughts as information comes along, but in the meantime I figure there are other pertinent teams making news.

The most interesting bit of news as far as the 49ers are concerned is the emergence of Russell Wilson in Seattle as what appears to be a fairly viable candidate for the starting quarterback position. Wilson apparently impressed the Seahawks coaching staff enough that Pete Carroll thinks he can be viable competition for the starting quarterback position.

While it is only minicamp and things can change drastically by the time training camp gets going, this is still an interesting and moderately amusing development. Earlier this offseason, the Seahawks signed Matt Flynn to a three year, $19.5 million contract. Although Tarvaris Jackson was expected to compete with Flynn, it seemed apparent that the Seahawks wanted to Flynn to win the job.

Now that they have added Wilson and find themselves with some measure of confidence in him, it is entirely possible Jackson could end up no better than the number three quarterback on the roster. Plenty can happen over the next three months, but the writing would appear to be on the wall for T-Jax.

As for the Seahawks offense? Well, they remain a significant question mark on the offensive side of the ball. Marshawn Lynch was a beast last year, even with a fairly anemic passing attack. They need to develop that passing attack in some capacity to make the next step. They will be throwing several variables into the mix, not the least of which is trying to keep their wide receivers healthy.

While the entire division adding some intriguing talent to the mix this offseason, the Seahawks are the team that scares me the most heading into 2012 from top to bottom.

Raiders Roster Review: Chimdi Chekwa

Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

Raider Nation didn’t see much of Chimdi Chekwa as a rookie. He was initially pegged as another Al Davis stopwatch special when selected in the 4th round after a 4.4-40 showing at the combine. Chekwa dealt with injury issues before his pro career began, then at start of his first NFL training camp and that continued into his first season with a hamstring issue that finally ended his rookie campaign.

When he was healthy enough to play in the preseason you saw some talent but also some serious room for growth. At one point the Raiders tried him out as a safety where he looked completely lost.

Of the four games he appeared in, Chekwa’s most memorable outing was his lone start against Tom Brady and the high powered Patriots passing game. There were some hit or miss moments as you’d expect but overall Chekwa looked fluid in coverage showing real potential.

Now the question is how big a step forward will he take in year two?

Reggie McKenzie’s roster overhaul seemingly unfolds with each passing week. Chekwa could be getting his last audition as a Raider. The secondary is a work in progress with the position of cornerback being one of the areas of greatest need for the team. Chekwa has a chance to get an expanded role coming out of camp as nothing is written in ink at this point. Aside from Tyvon Branch every position in the secondary is up for grabs.

Becoming a starter might be a real reach for Chekwa but challenging for a role as a nickel corner is realistic possibility.
